DIAMOND addresses the challenges of rapid diagnosis of microbial infections by means of DNA analysis and antibiotic administration only if considered necessary. This will be achieved with the development of a prototype, automated and portable diagnostic platform, based on a lab-on-a-chip where bacterial DNA will be amplified rapidly and efficiently, combined with detection of amplified DNA on a sensitive field-effect transistor (FET) sensor. This novel lab-on-a-chip will be cost efficient, as it will be fabricated on printed circuit board (PCB) substrates, implementing PCB compatible technology and capitalizing on the established PCB industry.
